A lot of the web doesn’t need a database, server-side scripting, or a framework – good old HTML, CSS, and a smattering of JavaScript will do the job. A static site can work for the long haul without the admin overhead and the constant worry of getting hacked or spammed. Yet we don’t want to go back to the days of Stonehenge and manipulating code across pages and FTPing files to servers. Having the efficiencies and workflows that modern web platforms offer is ideal, but in a form that we can control and customise is where modern static site generators come in.
But why settle for a static site generator that only goes up to 10 when you can have one that goes to 11? In this session, we’ll explore how 11ty (Eleventy) cranks up the volume on modern web development by delivering maximum flexibility without the noise. This isn’t just one louder; it’s fundamentally different.
11ty lets you rock’n’roll without getting lost on your way to the stage, while its extensive customisation options ensure you can fine-tune every aspect of your design and build process. From simple blogs to complex enterprise sites, 11ty adapts to your needs rather than forcing you to adapt to its constraints.
By session’s end, you’ll understand why 11ty isn’t just another static site generator – it’s the one that goes to 11.

reclaimhosting: Welcome to the Chat
Jim Groom: Now for the Klapdor! Represent
Stephen Downes: Woo, finally made it to a session on time
taylorjadin: I'm always here for a chat about static site generators
Tim Klapdor: Recorded the presentation - but am here live in the chat!
Jason: Looking forward to this one...love the title too
Jim Groom: @Tim you are dedicated, is the time difference horrendous?
Stephen Downes: Great, that means my snark is going to land!
Tim Klapdor: Ots 6.30am here - I would have been up walking the dog! But I did get up early so I could watch Bonnie
CogDog The Blog: Tim does the best slides
Jason: Go watch Spinal Tap!!!
Rushaw: No apologies necessary
Readywriting: This is amazing.
Stephen Downes: I watched it but I didn't like it
Jim Groom: We did a conference at UMW where the theme was turn it up to 11, so I am loving Tim, as I sure @rushaw is
Readywriting: I learned this back in undergrad.
Rushaw: @jimgroom I was thinking the same thing!
Readywriting: How to code in HTML, that is.
Stephen Downes: My HTML looked a lot nicer than this! :)
taylorjadin: Yeah WP does not produce beautiful markup
taylorjadin: most CMS's don't really
Stephen Downes: They never have. I remember having to wade through Geocities to figure out how they did web poage editors
Jim Groom: @Tim well done spelling this all out so cleanly, loving this
Jim Groom: @Tim You should be a Youtube, I would like and subscribe :)
Tim Klapdor: Well this video is up on YouTube... open to suggestions
Bonnie Stewart: this is cool. the Spinal Tap elements are helping me work through my natural aversion to focusing on technical things :)
Jason: @bonnie 100%
Jim Groom: @Sorry, I meant you should be a "Youtuber, cause you have the explanation chops
Bonnie Stewart: "...and your will to live" lol
Readywriting: This is basically my life right now...
Jason: Divi is the worst for this...change themes and your whole site is gone

HibbittsDesign: Markdown ❤️
Readywriting: Oh I need something like this for my sewing patterns.
Pilot: This is fantastic 🤩
Tim Klapdor: We should chat Readywriting - would be cool to build something like that!
taylorjadin: I have a recipe site that I use similar to this, as an alternative to a recipe app. Its been my testing ground to get familiar with WP Full Site Editing, so almost the opposite to 11ty
Jim Groom: @tim How do you do comments in Eleventy? You need an addon?
taylorjadin: 11ty does look way less complex than the SSGs I've used before, Jekyll and Hugo. I should play with it for sure
Tim Klapdor: Yes comments need to be hosted externally - my current implementation is using Mastodon. But I know D'arcy has made a home grown solution for his SSG blog which I'm interested in.
Jim Groom: I was thinking about D'Arcy's AI coding to build out his site, it is pretty awesome
Tim Klapdor: That's my experience Taylor... long time Jekyll user and 11ty is a lot easier to get setup and working (and a lot more forgiving).
Jim Groom: The Stonehenge is kind of like an 11. Hmmm
Mark: Don't crush that dwarf, hand me the pliers! Firesign Theatre
Pilot: @Taylor @Tim I've been super intimidated by static site generators up until now... maybe this is what gets me over that
taylorjadin: It would be interesting/possible to use WordPress as an engine JUST for comments. Thinking that through, I can think of a path to do that...
That being said, I do think D'Arcy's comment engine thats just PHP SQLite is really cool
taylorjadin: I know Kathleen Fitzpatrick uses 11ty for as well:
https://kfitz.info/
Tim Klapdor: Yes Pilot - that's why you need 11... its 1 louder.
Jim Groom: @tim Absolutely brilliant talk/presentation---thank you so much for turning it up to 11!
Rushaw: Fantastic! Slides are a 12!!!
Tim Klapdor: Thanks! I'll share all the links in the presentation soon - on a blog post and socials.
