Improvising the future of digital storytelling

Like all methods of learning and teaching, storytelling grapples with accelerating cultural and digital transformation. And time zones. I’ll improvise a digital Networked Narrative, or, Exquisite Corpse.  Some storytellers will be live, some recorded, and all woven into a mettisage narrative of the near future. As Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie noted, the danger of a single story lies in its incompleteness; métissage counters this by weaving together multiple narratives to honor both unity and diversity.

Join us to discover possible futures of digital storytelling and share your stories in the comments and with your own favorite media.

I’ll be blogging at https://connectingislearning.com and on Mastodon, https://mastodon.social/@mcorbettwilson.

reclaimhosting: Welcome to the Chat
Robert: Hello!!
Stephen Downes: Hiya, still can use sound, will Reclaim pass the accessibility test?
Mark Corbett Wilson: We're creating this on the fly.
Mark Corbett Wilson: And we're live!
HibbittsDesign: Hello!
Rushaw: 😥 Last session
readywriting: BRYAN! One of the best parts of my job is being a colleague of Bryan.
Rushaw: Bryan sounds great!
taylorjadin: escellent!
Rushaw: Jealous of you @readywriting!
readywriting: PODCASTING WILL NEVER DIE!
readywriting: (Please check out my podcast All The Things ADHD)
taylorjadin: Not many types of stories have interactive elements for the audience like games can have except maybe the goosebumps books
Joe Murphy: (Please check out Lee's podcast All The Things ADHD. It's awesome!)
Pilot Irwin: #podcasts4life
readywriting: Fan Fic is also HUGE. Archive of One's Own is massive.
Joe Murphy: (I'll throw out a rec that the podcast Overdue, which mostly discusses books, has multiple episodes where they read their way through a Choose Your Own Adventure book, and they're awesome.)
readywriting: The complex tagging systems on AO3 is a story in and of itself.
sleepy nomad: I wish it wasn't so late over here in Scotland, will have to watch this in the morning
HibbittsDesign: 👍🏼
Rushaw: 👍
Mark Corbett Wilson: @sleepy_nomad I'll edit the audio and put it on combobulating.net.
sleepy nomad: @mark thanks fellow combobulator
Mark Corbett Wilson: Combobulating4Life!
sleepy nomad: 😁
Joe Murphy: My kneejerk reaction is that most of the AI-enabled digital storytelling I've seen feels like printing in Comic Sans. It seems inherently cheesy and fake in a bad way. And yet, (while I don't call them stories) I did enjoy getting Dr. Oblivion to narrate radio bumpers for me... https://josephmurphy.name/ds106/radio/like-a-puppet-on-a-string/
Mark Corbett Wilson: "One Future of Learning", a digital story I made in a StoryCenter.org "Voices of the Future Present" workshop I facilitated with Joe Lambert. https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/1002303853
Robert: I think in many ways Intellectual property rights law is major impediment for moving forward with knowledge creation. I like a lot of CopyLeft and remix thinking....
Joe Murphy: True story - I think I hosted Storycenter's first or second pandemic-era online workshop. And while they did an excellent job and the stories were wonderful, it was also abundantly clear what was lost in the workshop model. Yes - the "rubbing shoulders" aspect, the really spontaneous knowledge sharing and feedback - that's what we lost.
Mark Corbett Wilson: @Joe Murphy We're still in early days. So many people are figuring out the affordances of digital commuinication. Some things are lost, but some things are gained: we're together live from around the world. Except the presenters. ;_
Mark Corbett Wilson: *;)*
Mark Corbett Wilson: Joe is hopeful for people recognizing the beneftis of gathering in person.
Joe Murphy: Oh yeah! And again, it was a *profound* experience and a success. Whole lot of processing of both lockdown and BLM protests; I couldn't have picked a better partner. Also I could see some of the lessons learned showing up in later workshops with Joe & Co.
Mark Corbett Wilson: Wrapping up, here are the public announcements!
taylorjadin: omg I love that
taylorjadin: stories are like soylent green, their made of people
Mark Corbett Wilson: In digital stories, no humans are harmed!
HibbittsDesign: Really interesting session, thank you!
Robert: Thank You.... I did get some good stuff in the midst of confusions :-)
Joe Murphy: I do think there's something interesting to explore in the differences between workshop-model storytelling and more solo-model storytelling. But community is still vital to both
Rushaw: Thanks, Mark! And Taylor go take a break :)
Joe Murphy: Great stuff! Thank you! And thanks to all Reclaimers for a great conference!
Mark Corbett Wilson: Thanks to all!
